The People of Cabaret

Cultural Diversity in the Performing Arts

The People of Cabaret is an organisation dedicated to amplifying, uplifting, nurturing and supporting artists who are Indigenous and/or Bla(c)k and/or people of colour (IBPOC) who work in cabaret and the live performing arts sector. Formed and managed by Bla(c)k, Indigenous and people of colour, they are all too familiar with the challenges the community is facing. This lived experience fuels The People of Cabaret's commitment to ongoing program improvement. Continuous monitoring and evaluation are key to communicating their successes.

The People of Cabaret turned to Third Measure to provide information on diversity in the creative and performing arts. Using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), we were able to identify the cultural makeup of specific populations. These numbers were compared to the cultural diversity of people working in the Performing Arts. What we found was that the industry was not representative of the community's cultural diversity.

Having this information at their disposal, The People of Cabaret can highlight to funding bodies the need for their work.
